Surge Battery Metals said its Nevada North Lithium joint venture with Evolution Mining has finalized a 2026 drill program, filed with the Bureau of Land Management under its 2025 Exploration Plan of Operations Permit, with mobilization targeted for September 2026 to gather data for a Bankable Feasibility Study.

Surge Battery Metals Inc. (OTCQX: NILIF; TSXV: NILI; FSE: DJ5) has moved its Nevada lithium project a step closer to a construction decision, saying the joint venture that owns it has finalized a 2026 drill program built around the data a Bankable Feasibility Study requires rather than around headline assay numbers.

The work will be run by Nevada North Lithium, LLC, the joint venture Surge formed with Evolution Mining Limited to advance the Nevada North Lithium Project. The venture has made its submission to the Bureau of Land Management under its 2025 Exploration Plan of Operations Permit, has issued a request for proposals to drilling contractors, and is targeting mobilization in September 2026. Execution is expected this fall and will continue into the 2027 drill season.

A drill program aimed at engineers, not headlines

The composition of the program is the tell. Alongside continued work to define and upgrade the mineral resource, the campaign is designed to deliver condemnation drilling, pit definition, mine plan optimization, water supply and hydrogeological data, and geotechnical data. The venture also intends to collect representative bulk tonnage material for metallurgical test work and flow sheet optimization, ahead of a planned pilot program.

Each of those items answers a question an engineering firm asks before it will sign a feasibility study. Condemnation drilling confirms that the ground earmarked for waste dumps, process plants and haul roads does not itself host mineralization that would later be buried under infrastructure. Pit definition drilling tightens the boundary between ore and waste so that a pit can be designed rather than sketched. Geotechnical drilling establishes how steeply the pit walls can be cut without failing — a variable that moves the strip ratio and therefore the operating cost of the mine more than almost anything else.

The hydrogeological component is arguably the most consequential in Nevada. Water supply is the constraint that has slowed or reshaped multiple lithium developments in the state, and a feasibility study that cannot demonstrate a secure, permittable source is not bankable in any meaningful sense. Putting water work into this campaign, rather than deferring it, suggests the joint venture is trying to retire that risk early.

Bulk sample and pilot plant point at the flow sheet

The plan to collect representative bulk tonnage material for metallurgical test work and flow sheet optimization, ahead of a planned pilot program, is the other item worth marking. Laboratory-scale metallurgy on drill core tells a developer what is theoretically recoverable. A pilot program tells lenders what is recoverable at continuous throughput, using material that reflects what the pit will actually deliver in its early years.

For claystone-hosted lithium in Nevada, that distinction carries weight. Processing route, reagent consumption and residue handling are where capital and operating estimates in this style of deposit tend to move, and they are also where financiers concentrate their technical due diligence. Getting bulk sample material out of the ground during the same campaign that produces geotechnical and pit-definition data compresses the schedule — the metallurgy can proceed in parallel with the resource update rather than after it.

What the Evolution partnership changes

The structure here differs from the usual junior-developer story. Nevada North Lithium, LLC is a joint venture between Surge and Evolution Mining, an established producer, which means the project is being advanced through a corporate vehicle with a partner rather than by a single exploration company living quarter to quarter on equity raises. For NILIF shareholders, that partnership is the principal reason a program of this scope — condemnation, geotechnical, hydrogeological, bulk sampling and a pilot plant, all at once — is being contemplated at all. Feasibility-stage drilling is expensive and produces very little in the way of promotable news flow.

The announcement was carried by INN Battery Metals. Surge did not disclose a budget, a metre count or a rig count for the campaign in the material summarized, and the identity of the drilling contractor remains open — the request for proposals has only just gone out.

How the shares sit going in

The market has not treated the news as a catalyst so far. NILIF last traded at 0.61, down 3.67% from a prior close of 0.63, in a session range of 0.60 to 0.63, as of the last trade recorded at 20:00 GMT on 18 August 2026. That move came on a broadly weak tape: the S&P 500 tracker closed at $767.45, off 0.68%, while the Nasdaq 100 proxy fell 1.69% to $717.51 and the Dow 30 fund slipped 0.24% to $532.91.

That context matters for how to read the price action. A junior developer trading below a dollar on a US over-the-counter venue moves on liquidity as much as on news, and a sub-4% decline on a day when large-cap technology fell more than that tells you very little about how the drill program was received.

The checkpoints from here

Between now and the Bankable Feasibility Study, there are four dates and decisions that will define whether this timeline holds:

  • BLM clearance. The submission has been made under the existing 2025 Exploration Plan of Operations Permit. Federal permitting is the schedule variable Surge controls least, and a September mobilization depends on it.
  • Contractor award. Rig availability in Nevada is cyclical. The request for proposals is out; the award, and the day rate implied by it, will indicate how tight the market is.
  • Winter break and restart. The program is explicitly designed to run this fall and continue into the 2027 drill season, so investors should expect a pause rather than a continuous stream of results.
  • Pilot program scope. The bulk sample is the input; the pilot plant is where the flow sheet either confirms laboratory metallurgy or forces a redesign.

None of that produces the kind of intercept headline that historically moves lithium juniors. What it produces, if it works, is a study a lender can underwrite. Investors accustomed to grading Surge on drill-hole grades will need a different scorecard for the next twelve to eighteen months — one built around permits granted, water secured, pit slopes defined and recoveries demonstrated at scale.

The wider lithium market backdrop remains the unresolved question hanging over the entire exercise. A feasibility study is only bankable if the price deck behind it is credible to the institutions being asked to fund construction. Surge and Evolution are, in effect, spending the next two drill seasons building the technical case so that the project is shovel-ready whenever the commodity cycle cooperates.

Frequently asked questions

What did Surge Battery Metals announce?

Surge said Nevada North Lithium, LLC — its joint venture with Evolution Mining Limited — has finalized a 2026 drilling program at the Nevada North Lithium Project. The venture filed with the Bureau of Land Management under its 2025 Exploration Plan of Operations Permit, issued a request for proposals to drilling contractors, and is targeting mobilization in September 2026.

What is a Bankable Feasibility Study?

A Bankable Feasibility Study is the most detailed stage of mine study, prepared to a standard that lenders and project financiers will underwrite. It requires engineering-grade inputs on pit design, rock stability, water supply, processing recoveries and capital cost. The 2026 drill program is designed specifically to generate that data for Nevada North.

Why does the program include condemnation and geotechnical drilling?

Condemnation drilling confirms that ground set aside for waste dumps, plant sites and roads does not contain mineralization that would be sterilized by building over it. Geotechnical drilling establishes how steeply pit walls can be cut safely, which directly affects the strip ratio and therefore the mine's operating cost estimates.

How did NILIF shares perform most recently?

NILIF last traded at 0.61, down 3.67% from a prior close of 0.63, with a session range of 0.60 to 0.63, as of the last recorded trade at 20:00 GMT on 18 August 2026. Broader markets were also lower that session, with the S&P 500 tracker down 0.68% and the Nasdaq 100 proxy down 1.69%.

What role does Evolution Mining play?

Evolution Mining Limited is Surge's partner in Nevada North Lithium, LLC, the joint venture that owns and is advancing the Nevada North Lithium Project. The joint venture structure means the feasibility-stage work programme is being run through a shared corporate vehicle rather than by Surge alone.

When will results from the drilling be available?

Surge said execution is expected this fall and will continue into the 2027 drill season, so the campaign spans more than one field season with an interruption between them. The company did not disclose a budget, metre count, rig count or a date for the Bankable Feasibility Study itself in the announcement.
