Cobalt’s pricing history is defined by extreme swings. After reaching record highs driven by electric vehicle (EV) battery demand, prices collapsed sharply as supply surged from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which accounts for roughly 70% of global mined output. That oversupply, combined with a slowdown in EV adoption growth in key markets and a shift toward lower-cobalt battery chemistries like lithium iron phosphate (LFP), sent prices tumbling from their peak. Supply Pressures and the DRC Factor

The DRC’s dominance creates a concentrated risk that markets price in regularly — political instability, artisanal mining conditions, and infrastructure limitations all introduce unpredictability. Periodic export restrictions or regulatory changes from Kinshasa can send spot prices lurching within days. At the same time, major mining firms including Glencore have at various points idled production capacity in response to low prices, creating the potential for sharp supply contractions if demand conditions improve quickly.

The United States, European Union, and allied nations have all classified cobalt as a critical mineral, triggering funding for domestic refining capacity, strategic stockpiling discussions, and diplomatic efforts to diversify sourcing away from DRC-Chinese refinery chains. China currently controls a dominant share of cobalt refining capacity, meaning the raw material travels from central Africa to Chinese processors before reaching battery manufacturers — a chokepoint that Western governments are actively working to disrupt.

The Outlook: Recovery, Volatility, and Strategic Positioning

Market consensus leans toward a gradual cobalt price recovery over the medium term, though the path will likely be uneven. The underlying drivers remain intact: global EV fleets are still expanding, battery manufacturing capacity is being built at scale across Asia, Europe, and North America, and demand from the defense and industrial sectors is not abating. The key question is timing — specifically, when demand growth will outpace the current inventory overhang and bring the market back into structural deficit.

Battery chemistry evolution adds an important caveat. If LFP adoption accelerates across more vehicle segments, it could suppress cobalt intensity per vehicle even as overall EV volumes grow. However, solid-state batteries — widely viewed as the next generation of energy storage technology — are expected to use cobalt-containing cathode materials, potentially reigniting demand in ways that are difficult to quantify today. This dual scenario creates genuine uncertainty that makes confident price forecasting a challenge even for well-resourced commodity desks.

For those monitoring cobalt price movement with strategic intent, the current market environment offers both risk and opportunity. Prices at suppressed levels relative to recent highs may represent attractive entry points for long-horizon investors who believe in the metal’s indispensable role in the energy transition.
